Mazda CX-50 trademark hints at a larger coupe-like crossover

Mazda recently introduced the CX-30, a coupe-like small crossover that slots in between the CX-3 and CX-5 in Mazda’s crossover lineup. Now it looks like Mazda may be getting ready to add another larger coupe-like crossover, since it recently trademarked the “CX-50” name with the European Patent Office.

Japan’s Spyder7 discovered the trademark in Europe and a quick search in the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s files also shows that Mazda trademarked the CX-50 name last summer. Mazda actually trademarked the names from CX-10 up to CX-90, but that might just be to make sure no other automaker uses any of the names.

Mazda hasn’t released any details about the CX-50, but Spyder7 is reporting that the CX-50 will be based on Mazda’s new rear-wheel drive platform. The new platform will also be used for the new Mazda6. Under the hood both models will also be powered by Mazda’s new 3.0-liter inline-six SkyActiv-X engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. A diesel 3.3-liter inline-six SkyActiv-D engine is also planned, but it probably won’t be offered in the US.

A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower will be the base engine, while a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 226 horsepower is also on the options list.

The Mazda CX-50 is reportedly going to debut in 2021 or early 2022, but right now it’s not known if it will replace the CX-5 or actually be a new crossover that will slot in between the CX-5 and CX-7.
